Areas of Application

There are many areas of application for biomass pellets and we've only been able to list the most common uses as examples here. We did not intend to show these examples in any weighted order or with any priority of one over the other. In essence, any biomass with a humidity level of below 20% is inherently suited for being pressed into a pellet.

 

Fuel (Heating)

Advantages:

Dry Wall Filling

Advantages:

  • Optimal sound proofing and nonflammable materials possible.

Fertilizer

Advantages:

  • Own mixtures for optimal effect
  • Use of own resources
  • 100 % Control over the contents (Bio)
  • Long-term fertilization possible (slow absorption)
  • Mixtures stay permanent
  • Production is simple and the required storage space is reduced by approx. 4x
  • Easy handling of the pellets with pneumatic conveyors

Saw Dust

Create a valuable solid fuel pellet from a waste material!

Wood workshops can generatearge a large amount of saw dust and other wood-based wastes every day. Such materials are usually disposed of or sold cheaply as animal bedding. In some cases even high costs of disposal have to be incurred.

A short example:

Saw dust is sold for about 11-15€ per CBM (approx. 220kg per CBM), hence a metric ton is sold for approx. 60€. The same amount of saw dust can achieve sales prices of 260€ per ton when turned into pellets. Therefore, by simply increasing the density of the material at hand an additional profit of 200€ per ton can be achieved. In such an example the machine has paid itself back in less than a year provided with sufficient material for processing. The same example holds for wood chips or shavings of high grade.

Our process allows for the production of first class wood pellets for your own use or sale without an overbearing use of manpower in a relatively automated manner. With the simple exchange of one flat-die for another it's easy to switch production from 6mm standard pellets to larger diameters like 8mm or even 20mm.

A temperature of approx. 80°C is achieved during the pressing of the pellets. Due to this high temperature and the high pressures applied, the source biomass is forced into the desired shape and made durable for long storage.

In the example o saw dust the volume is reduced approx. 3-fold. This means a compression of 3:1 hence reducing the required storage space by about 67%.

Hay

Pellets made from hay are ideally suited as an animal feed.

Example:

Many horses can develop allergic reactions when being fed with loose hay. These respiratory disorders can result in asthma and "head shaking". Until now the only viable solutions were to wet the hay, switch to hay bedding, apply pressed hay or other green fodder to supply those affected horses with basic feed. Pelletized hay allows them to consume the feed without the usual exposure to dust. Another advantage is that hay pellets can be stored longer and require less storage space.

Hay pellets are sold on the open market for approx. 4€ per kg. This is a theoretical price per ton of 4000€. Do you know what value goes to waste on your meadows?

Hops

God save... our hops and malt

Following this old German proverb more hops is pressed into pellets, maintaining the alpha-acid levels throughout while increasing the durability notably. Furthermore the hops is protected from vermin, contamination and dust and can be transported, dosed and stored with ease. A raising number of hobby and micro breweries has increased the price per kg of hops pellets to 40€.

Savory & Marjoram

Sometimes the more unusual ideas yield the most surprising results.

Stems from (summer) savory and Marjoram can be processed into pellets and be used for a high-grade solid fuel and can be hence used heating etc.

A kg of this waste material contains approx. 5kW of heating energy, which is equal to 1/2L of heating oil.

Wood Chips

The production of wood chips entails large amounts of over or undersized material that is sifted out for standardized wood chip granularities. A large part of these drop-out materials could not be made available as fuel in the heating process even though these leftovers can be processed into pellets to feed them back into the cycle, eliminating 100% of the waste from this process.

These sifted wood chips of standardized granularity achieve a higher purchase than regular chips. Producer of refined wood chips distinguish themselves from the competition through higher customer satisfaction.

A Short Example:

Wood chips are sold at a price of 110€ per metric ton. Wood pellets are sold at a going rate of approx. 260€ per metric ton. By simply increasing the density of the material a theoretical value of 150€ per ton can be gained. With such profits per ton pay back times of less than one year are achievable. The same example hold for wood shavings or saw dust.

Fermentation Residue

The term fermentation residue entails usually all solid components that need to be expelled from biogas reactors after the primary reaction with e.g. liquid & solid manure, fuel crops (corn, wheat or biomass wastes)  is finished. These leftovers are ideally suited to be used as fertilizer because virtually all trace elements, nitrogen and phosphorus compounds as well as the sulfur-compounds (deepening on process) are still present within the residue. 

Due to the fermentation the the fertilizer is far less  chemically aggressive to the plants compared to fertilization with raw liquid manure. Furthermore, the phosphorus is easier to absorb for the plants and the smell is kept to a minimum. About 50% of the invested biomass for gas generation has to be dealt with as fermentation residue.

 

Because fermentation residue or liquid manure cannot be applied to the fields in the winter months, operators of biogas generators must have large storage areas available. The production of pellets from these residue materials can help to reduce the needed storage area dramatically. Furthermore the pellets are easier to handle and can be transported over larger distances more economically. Finally, these pellets are compatible with standard farming machines to apply the fertilizer in ideal amounts. 

The densified substrate release their nutrients slowly into the soil representing a chance for deposit fertilization. In some cases these sublate pellets are also used as a solid fuel to further reduce their volume or capture their thermal energy.

Bakery Waste

Old Bread

We don't encourage the waste of food but also face the reality of how e.g. bread is being marketed today. Returned bread is taken every day from bakeries and sales points in massive amount as it's being sorted out because it's near its best-before-date.

Storing old bread today isn't as important as it was in past times where bread wasn't made every day for instance. Today there is a wide range of products available any day any time and consumers demand it to be fresh when they buy it. The abundance in our modern post industrial societies has changed consumers' behavior causing massive amounts of now unwanted merchandise being returned every day. Mostly, the overproduction has to be disposed off at the cost of the producer.

Pelletizing this old bread makes it available for alternative uses, and new markets to avoid wasteful disposal. Pelletizing this biomass hence is an attempt to mitigate the impact of overproduction as best as possible.

  • Re-capturing of energy content

2kg of old bread contain approx. 10kW of thermal energy which is equal to 1L of heating oil. This makes old bread an ideal fuel source and can help to recover up to 50% of the energy costs and reduce up to 91% of the CO2-emission at the producer's level.

Bread is compressed at a rate of approx. 4:1. This means a reduction of needed storage area by 75%.

Cellulose

Cellulose is an important commodity in the production of Paper (Lignin & cellulose-rich wood) as well as for the chemical industry and clothing industry sectors (Cotton etc.).

 

In nature cellulose if found in wast amounts. This is why extensive research is carried out to vet cellulose and other biomasses as a natural fuel source.

Also, it's perfect properties as a building material turn cellulose into a desired commodity as a filling and insulation agent.

We Test Your Material

Before you purchase any pellet mill we strongly recommend to carry out a trial in our testing facility.

During this trial we determine your submitted material's ability to be pelletized. In this process we also determine which flat-die(s) apply for your intended use. To do a meaningful test we require approx. 100kg of your material. Please make sure that your material is dried to less than 20% humidity and that it arrives as such at our facilities.
